A big part of the fifth semester of the Graphic Design program at Seneca College is completing your portfolio, resume, business cards and process book for placement interviews for the upcoming semester.

The first part of this process is branding yourself by creating a personal logo. For my logo I wrote my name using hand lettering while having a single line drawing of a tulip hanging off the ‘S’ in my last name. I decided to add a tulip because my dad’s side of the family is from the Netherlands is it is a big part of my life.

Next step was to compile all of your work that has been done throughout your time in the program as well as any creative projects you have done outside of school that would benefit you are your interviews.
After this was done it is time to start designing your portfolio! For my portfolio I decided to create my cover and back cover by bookbinding it myself. After that was done, I used iron on vinyl cut in the shape of my logo on my cover. Once my pages were printed, I had to punch two holes on each page so they could be inserted into my custom book.

Along with our portfolios we created a resume, mine is an 8”x 16” gate bi fold. It is then folded together to form an 8” x 8” square which is seals by a custom silver wax seal that has the tulip from my logo on it. Inside my resume I included work experience, schooling, certification, soft wear skill as well as volunteer work. Throughout I used different colours of purple as a gradient to show the time passing. I also included a secretion where I placed my business card.

Next is the process book where I included all of my process work from four projects shown in my portfolio. This may include research, sketches, mind maps, first digital comps, progressions and final versions.

Finally, we have the leave behind which is something you can give to your interview as a reminder of your meeting. In my case I used my custom wax seal to make magnets. Each leave behind will include two magnets in a plastic sleeve topped with my contact information that is a translation of my business cards.
